Find Marin Booking Photos

Marin County jail mugshots and booking photos should be treated as booking records, not proof of guilt or a complete public photo archive. To find Marin County jail mugshots, first check the current county booking log for the person's custody record, then use official records channels if the photo is not shown online. California law adds limits on law-enforcement social media use and commercial pay-to-remove practices. The safest Marin County booking photo search starts with the roster, then moves to the Sheriff Records Division or court record process when needed.

Marin Jail Mugshots Scope

The official online jail roster for Marin County is the Marin County Public Booking Log. It displays public data about people arrested and booked into Marin County Jail in the last 48 hours who are still in custody, plus a complete current inmate list at the time of search. The official text inspected during research did not explicitly confirm that public results include booking photographs. Marin takes booking photos during intake, but public display of Marin County jail mugshots on the booking log was not confirmed from the official inspected text.

Marin Sheriff's booking policies do confirm that all booked persons are photographed. Cogent captures digitized photographic images, an inmate photo sheet contains a photograph and vital information, and an inmate identification card with a photo is made and given to the inmate. Extra photo sheets are distributed for jail records, medical staff, alpha card, and jail file purposes. Those are internal booking-photo facts. They do not prove that each photo is posted to the public roster.

Use that page to locate the custody record first, then move to Sheriff Records if a booking photo or older booking record must be requested.

Find Marin County Booking Photos

Because public mugshot display was not confirmed, the access chain should be careful. The booking log can confirm current custody and booking data for people still in custody. Jail staff can confirm current custody, booked charges, booking agency, bail, next court date, and minimum release eligibility for certain under-the-influence holds. Older or out-of-custody booking records route to the Sheriff Records Division, and court records route to Marin Superior Court after charges are filed.

  1. Open the Marin County Public Booking Log and search the current roster by last name.
  2. Review whether the person is still in custody and whether any photo field is present in the live rendered record.
  3. Call the jail information line at (415) 499-7316 or (415) 473-7316 if the roster does not answer the current-custody question.
  4. Contact the Sheriff Records Division for booking-record requests when the person is no longer in custody or the booking photo is not online.
  5. Use Marin court records after arrest for filed charges, sealing, and court case status rather than photo lookup.

The records route is not a promise that every photo will be released. California Public Records Act access can be limited by exemptions, sealing, juvenile confidentiality, public-safety limits, and other restrictions. The Sheriff Records Division may receive requests by mail or fax, but individual records must be picked up in person with valid ID.

Marin Booking Photo Fields

A booking photo is taken during jail intake, but a public booking photo field was not confirmed in the official roster capture. For that reason, the field inventory should separate confirmed internal booking-photo creation from confirmed public roster facts. The Sheriff FAQ supports current custody, booked charge, booking agency, bail, next court date, and limited release timing details. It does not support claims that the public page always shows a mugshot, height, weight, pod, or per-charge statute field.

Field or FactWhat It Shows
Booking photoCreated during Marin intake, but public display on the booking log was not confirmed.
Current custody statusWhether the person is currently in Marin County Jail custody.
Booking chargesCharges listed at booking, which can differ from later filed court charges.
Booking agencyThe police agency that booked the person.
BailApproximate online bail when shown; exact bail must be confirmed with the jail.
Next court appearanceAvailable for current in-custody people through jail channels.
Not confirmed publiclyMugshot display, physical descriptors, housing unit, case number, and per-charge code fields.

What is and isn't public: Marin's booking log supports public access to current booking data, but the research did not confirm public mugshot display. Internal booking photos, juvenile records, sealed arrests, and restricted files may require official request channels or may be withheld.

Are Marin Mugshots Public

California public-record law supports access to many nonexempt government records, and Marin's booking-log page cites the California Public Records Act, specifically former Government Code 6254(f)(1), for booking-log data. The CPRA has since been recodified, and Government Code 7920.000 now establishes Division 10 as the California Public Records Act. Government Code 7922.525 provides that public records are open to inspection during agency office hours unless exempt, and reasonably segregable nonexempt parts must be available.

Booking-photo law is narrower than general roster access. Penal Code 13665 restricts police and sheriff social-media sharing of booking photos, especially nonviolent arrestees, with public-safety exceptions and removal duties. The California DOJ's 2024 legal alert interprets that law as covering booking photographs taken during or immediately after arrest. Civil Code 1798.91.1 restricts commercial booking-photo publishers from soliciting, requiring, or accepting payment to remove, correct, modify, or refrain from publishing a booking photograph.

Key Statutes:

Government Code 7920.000 establishes the California Public Records Act title for public-record access.

Government Code 7922.525 requires access to nonexempt public records and reasonably segregable portions.

Penal Code 13665 limits law-enforcement social-media posting of booking photos and creates removal rules.

Civil Code 1798.91.1 bars charging or accepting payment to remove or change published booking photographs.

Request Marin Booking Photos

If a Marin County booking photo is needed and the public roster does not show one, the official fallback is the Marin County Sheriff Records Division. Research identifies that division as the repository for booking records. Requests may be submitted by mail or fax, but individual records must be picked up in person, and valid ID must be shown before release. The division is at 1600 Los Gamos Dr. #200, San Rafael, CA 94903, phone (415) 473-7284, fax (415) 473-4126, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, closed holidays.

How Long Photos Stay Public

The research did not find a Marin-specific public rule stating how long a booking photo stays online, because public mugshot display on the booking log itself was not confirmed. The booking log's documented coverage is narrower: people arrested and booked in the last 48 hours who are still in custody, plus a complete list of inmates as of the search time. That means the online roster should not be treated as a long-term mugshot archive or a complete historical booking-photo database.

Once a person is released, the Sheriff FAQ says only current in-custody information is provided through jail staff. Older booking records should be handled through Sheriff Records, and filed charges through the court. If an arrest has been sealed, Penal Code 851.92 limits disclosure of sealed arrest, police investigative, and court records outside the person and criminal justice agencies except as allowed. If a case is still pending, the court record may remain public while some documents or details are access-limited.

Note: A name disappearing from the booking log may mean release or transfer, not that all booking records were erased.

Mugshot Removal and Sealing

California law gives two different types of protection that should not be mixed up. Penal Code 13665 governs law-enforcement social-media use of booking photographs and creates removal rules for certain public agency posts. It is not a total ban on all public access to all booking photos. Penal Code 851.92 covers sealed arrest records, including police investigative reports and court records, and limits disclosure after sealing. Civil Code 1798.91.1 targets pay-to-remove booking-photo publishing practices by barring a person or entity from charging or accepting payment to remove, correct, modify, or refrain from publishing a booking photo.

The safest removal path is the official records-clearing path. If charges were dismissed, declined, or otherwise resolved, check the court record and the applicable California arrest-record relief process. Do not pay a commercial site for removal. Do not assume the Sheriff's Office will remove material from third-party sites. For court outcomes, sealing, or eligibility questions, the originating court, the responsible agency, and qualified legal counsel are the correct sources.

State and Federal Photos

Marin County jail mugshots are different from state prison, federal, and immigration locator records. San Quentin Rehabilitation Center is a CDCR state prison in Marin County, but CDCR CIRIS is the proper lookup tool for sentenced state-prison custody. Research found no photo field in the inspected CIRIS API response. CIRIS is informational, may contain errors or omissions, and is not the official record.

The BOP Inmate Locator does not serve as a public federal mugshot source. The ICE Online Detainee Locator System is a custody locator, not a booking-photo database, and it does not search people under 18. A federal case or ICE hold does not make a federal mugshot available through the Marin County booking log. If a person is physically housed in Marin County Jail and currently in custody, the county log may provide the local custody clue; after transfer, use the correct state, federal, or immigration channel.

Marin Mugshot App Caveat

No dedicated Marin County Sheriff public mobile app, app-only custody roster, app-only warrant lookup, or app-only booking-photo lookup was found in the research pass. FixItMarin is a county service-request app for issues such as potholes, dumping, signs, parks, and unpermitted construction concerns. SCRAM Touchpoint is tied to pretrial or probation check-ins and community-service information after release or supervision. San Rafael's service app is municipal, not a custody or mugshot app.

That means Marin County jail mugshots and booking-photo questions should stay with the official web booking log, Sheriff Records Division, court record process, and applicable California law. Do not rely on app stores, social media posts, or commercial mugshot pages for official Marin custody status.
